Permanent Exclusion (Expulsion) The removal of a student from school with no expectation of return. This is typically a last resort, used when a student’s behaviour poses a severe and persistent risk to others. The decision is made by the Headteacher and can be appealed to the school’s governing body and, in the state sector, to an Independent Review Panel.
Fixed-Term Exclusion (Suspension) A temporary suspension for a set period, usually a few days to several weeks. Used when behaviour is disruptive but not severe enough to warrant permanent exclusion, giving both the student and school an opportunity to address the issue.
